Hi all,

I have a cluster with 2 ESXi 5.1 hosts. With HA configured and stating it is protecting the VMs. I shutdown my slave host, to which HA reacted as expected and started the VM's on my master host. I then started this host so I had both hosts running again. When I powered off my master host the other (original slave) host started an election and then times out. The VM running on the master host has gone down and become inaccessible via vSphere client.

I guess my question is can HA run with just 2 hosts within a cluster and either one of them fail and transfer the VMs. Ideally I don't want 1 host housing all the VMs and when that goes down the other host kicks in.

Thanks in advance

Regards,

Yes HA can run with two hosts. In this case the Slave Node should have been elected to become the Master and the virtual machines should have been restarted. I am not sure why this did not happen. If you can reproduce this I would suggest you file a bug with VMware Support so they can try to figure out why this happens.
