Re: resource pools question

Welcome to the community - The shares assigned to a VM are independent to the shares assigned to the Resource Pool. This is true for memory and CPU. So if I understand your environment you have 3 VMs where you have set the memory share to LOW. I am going to assume you have the resource pools set to NORMAL which is the default. -now lets look at the two possibilities:

  1. All VMs are demanding memory - so the first level is how the memory is split between the RP and the VM outside - since each has the same shares 10240 the memory will be divided as follows - RP will get 10240/(10240+10240) or 50% of the memory in the host and the outside VM will receive  10240/(10240+10240) or 50% of the memory in the host. The VMs in the RP will then share the memory the RP has received - so each inside VM will receive 5120/(5120+5120+5120) or 33.33% of the memory the RP will get or 33.33% of 50% of the memory of the host. If the VMs inside the RP are not fighting for memory and only one needs it is will get all of the RPs memory
  2. If the VMs inside the RP are figting for memory and the outside VM does not need memory then all the VM inside the RP will split the host memory equally and conversely if only the outside VM needs memory it will have access to all the available memory
